How I Got a Whole New Wardrobe for $200 Online
Do you like to look nice but aren’t exactly into fashion? I may be the only woman I know who is not super into clothes or shoes. That’s not to say I don’t like to look nice–I do, but whenever I have any extra money to spend, I don’t think about buying clothes so much as I think about taking a trip or going to a concert.
Eventually, it gets to a point where all of my clothes start to look a little more shabby and a little less chic. While on my weight loss journey, I didn’t want to buy clothes until I hit my goal so I could reward myself with a brand new wardrobe. However, when going on a weight loss journey, one might overlook those “in between” sizes, and that is where I am currently. I’m not in a size 8 yet, but I’m not in a size 16 anymore either, and most days I’m either struggling to keep my pants on or struggling to breathe!
I knew I had to go ahead and bite the bullet and buy some new clothes. After doing some research, I wound up getting 4 pairs of dress pants, 5 pairs of boots and dress shoes, 10 blouses, 4 skirts, 12 pairs of socks, 12 tank tops, 4 skirts, and 6 pairs of leggings for around $200. Here’s how I was able to get a brand new wardrobe without breaking the bank!
How I Got a New Work Wardrobe for $200 Online
Make a List
First, make a list of what you NEED. What other concerns do you have? Do you need clothing for a particular season? What do you need for the winter, and how can you make it work for the summer, too? If you’re worried about weight loss/gain, do you need to get clothes that will adjust when you do?
Do some research
I found that it would be a lot better for me to order clothes online than to purchase from a brick and mortar store. Some people need to try on clothes in a store, but I am not one of those people. For one thing, I hate trying on clothes. It usually leaves me drained and feeling bad about myself. Even if I like the way clothes look on me in a store, by the time I get home away from flattering mirrors and lighting, I might not like the way a piece looks. And for me it’s much easier to return something by sticking a label on it and mailing than it is to stand in line at the store and have to give an explanation to the store clerk about why I didn’t like it or I was too fat after all and no, I don’t want to open a store credit card or take advantage of the buy two get one free sale! I managed to find all of my clothes at Wal-Mart and Amazon. Neither is known for “high fashion”, but I guarantee you no one will be able to tell that my clothes came from either place because I learned at an early age how to make $100 look like a million bucks!
Stick to Classics
If you’re working with a budget for your new wardrobe, it may be best to stick to classic pieces and looks and find some inexpensive accessories like fashion scarves or necklaces to keep clothes looking fresh and different. I bought a few pairs of black and gray pants but bought blouses that were more colorful.
Read Online Reviews
I always check reviews first! Does it run small? Is it thinner than expected? Does it fall apart in the wash? If you are buying something online, chances are someone has already done the research so you don’t have to. You don’t know what you’re going to get in a store, but when buying something sight unseen it’s best to do your research before buying!
Buy one in Every Color
For items like socks, undershirts, leggings, etc., consider buying in bulk or in a package. I found some great buys on different colored tank tops, sets of leggings, and socks on Amazon and they worked great for me! Rather than buying individual pieces, I just let The Powers do the thinking for me. I saved money and didn’t have to pay for shipping, and I only had to try one thing on instead of each thing individually. Find a style and size that you like and flatters you? Buy it in a few different colors and save yourself some money and time! No need to reinvent the wheel here! At first, I bought 3 different pairs of pants. One pair fit great, but the other two didn’t. I sent two back and ordered two more pairs that were the same style as the one that fit well.
Mix and Match
With my classic pieces: various colored undershirts, sheer blouses and button-up blouses, leggings, skirts, and dress pants, I can make so many different outfits out of my basics. I still have a lot of jeans I can wear, so I can do both dressy and casual with my pieces. I can wear cute leggings and mini skirt with a button-up blouse and colorful undershirt with flats one day, and another week I can put that same button-up blouse with a different colored undershirt, jeans, and heeled boots. One piece can become so many different looks. There are so many possibilities!
Overall, be diligent, do your homework, and return items that don’t fit. If you like something, there’s no shame in getting the same style in a different color. Do what works for you and you could be saving money on your new wardrobe in no time!
